7.2 Mb to Give Way to 21 Mb as the Mobile Broadband Baseline Speed

The concept of an industry baseline speed appears to be absurd to most of the users of mobile broadband. The reason for this is that subscribers do not usually get the speeds that are advertised by service providers.

However, the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) pronounced 7.2 Mb as the baseline mobile broadband speed sometime earlier this year. Its decision was derived from the fact that most of the commercially oriented HSPA networks provide 7.2 Mb or more speeds. In addition, numerous mobile gadgets can manage this speed.

The GSA’s announcement led many members of the industry to ponder about future baseline speed. Owing to this, the GSA quickly initiated a study in which it contacted numerous specialists in the industry to get authentic information about future baseline speeds.

The study was carried on for more than two months, during which many manufacturers, network operators and suppliers were questioned. The conclusions of the study were enumerated in the document called ‘Mobile Broadband - The Next Baseline’. The unanimous view of the responders was that 21 Mb would be the new baseline that would be supported by HSPA+ in the coming few months.

This conclusion has not come as a surprise, as the 21 Mb benchmark has been envisaged by the industry for almost a year. Even better news is that a number of the respondents said that this new benchmark is not just based on speed. It is more inclusive and takes into account many other important elements in order to present better service to consumers.
